HALLAM STREET CORRIDOR

Client: City of Aspen
Location: Aspen, Colorado
General Contractor: Gould Construction
Project Status: Completed 2018

In 2015, the City of Aspen Open Space and Trails Board identified the area from Cemetery Lane to West Hallam street along Highway 82 as a safety concern for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists. The existing narrow, winding trail with poor sight lines and an obstructing bus stop prohibits pedestrian travel along the corridor. In 2016, after reviewing structural constraints, the City of Aspen conducted a ‘living lab’ to test an 8-foot pedestrian trail and 11-foot traffic lanes along Castle Creek Bridge. After a successful testing period, Connect One Design and Z Group Architects were hired to design new bus shelters to match other existing Valley bus stops. The new station was designed to include a bike share rack for 15 bicycles and complements the new pedestrian path extending from the bridge to Aspen’s West End. The path carefully weaves through existing mature trees and creates an inviting and highly functional corridor.
